We are celebrating a very special birthday today, as one of our beloved residents turns 105 years old! Maria Reiter was born in Slovakia on February 1st, 1914. She is quite the intriguing woman to say the least! Maria speaks three languages – English, Hungarian, and Slovak. She was a teacher in Slovakia during the 1930s before moving to New York City and then settling in Nutley, New Jersey for many years. Maria married her husband Edward and later had two sons, Edward and William. She has six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; she loves to hear all about how they are doing in school and what they are learning! Maria became a resident at East Village Place not too long after moving to Massachusetts, and she enjoys attending live musical entertainment programs and visits with Luna the therapy kitten.
Today is all about recognizing what a extraordinary individual Maria is!
To honor Maria for reaching this incredible birthday milestone, she received a special visit from Massachusetts State Representative, Brian Ashe. Brian presented Maria with an official certificate on behalf of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, which recognized her youthful age! She expressed her gratitude by thanking him for coming to visit her despite the frigid cold weather, to which he replied, “It’s not often that someone turns 105… I wouldn’t miss this special day!”
Maria enjoyed her birthday celebration while surrounded by family, friends, and associates of East Village Place. She smiled as a hearty choir of her loved ones cheerfully sang “happy birthday” before everyone indulged in the delicious cake!
We extend a warm thank you to Brian Ashe for coming to recognize Maria on her special day, and we are honored to have celebrated such a momentous day with such a wonderful woman!
Happy 105th Birthday, Maria!
